Somewhere around 2/3 of the way into this book, there is a “twist”, or at least newly revealed information, which throws a wrench in the whole story. It makes me realize that a simmering thread of the book, about what ways we delude ourselves and how that can be either beneficial or harmful to us, is in fact the central theme. I’m much more intrigued by the book now than I was before.

Nearly half. I’m doing a fairly good job of keeping my promise (to myself) to listen to this audiobook quicker so I don’t have to put it on hold again. Nothing much to say about the book itself. I feel strangely uninvolved in it, which is odd because the book clearly wants you to feel curiosity. The NPR tone of the book, reminiscent of ‘Serial’ and ‘This American Life’, still weirds me out, too.

Miller describes her father’s atheism as a sort of blissful nihilism, which bothers me. I guess that’s her true experience of him, but I hate the idea that the universe is bleak just because it doesn’t have real-life cartoon characters and magic. Also: Miller definitely writes like an NPR correspondent. It’s giving Sarah Vowell. Not sure I’m a fan of this voice outside of the radio/podcast context.

Audiobook. Even though it’s only 5 hours, I’m willing to bet it’ll get returned before I finish and I’ll have to put it back on hold. Idk, I might give this more time/focus in order to avoid that. So far, the author’s interest in David Starr Jordan calls to mind my own interest in Floyd Schmoe. He even had a memoir called THE DAYS OF A MAN, which is similar in title to Schmoe’s— THE YEARS OF MY DAY.
