There's a thin line between desensitization and crossing a boundary. That line is consent. A "joke" can really quickly turn. I get this is suppose to show character development, yet it lands weirdly for me.

I think the author fears that the reader will misinterpret the characters, so she spells out their worries/ fears. In general, I like the characters, but this hand holding is getting to be a bit much.
