" . . . to protect the parking agents, the city had turned over enforcement to the one group that was most committed to illegal parking as a status symbol and a way of life. The same organization charged with enforcing parking rules was also the one that broke those rules the most often and most openly: the NYPD."
I'd love to say I'm shocked that police officers break road laws. :|

"One reason that Americans retain such nostalgia for college is that it was the only time in our lives so much was within walking distance."
Gosh, that's true. College campuses are miniature worlds. I loved being able to walk everywhere, and it is indeed one of the things I look back on fondly.

"This book proposes an honest reckoning with the subsidies and externalities of cars, but it is not anticar. Parking has made an awful mess of the American city, but drivers are not the architects of this system. In a way they are its victims. In its best moments, driving feels like freedom, but our inability to get around any other way is a kind of prison."

I found this book to be incredible--so many everyday conditions we take for granted, but that have caused real damage. I notice more unused parking lots now and am so happy when new projects reduce their parking footprint. It is so eye-opening and disturbing, but hits right at the issue. I hope you are enjoying it, Caroline.

I've read a few articles about how asphalt expanses accelerate the climate crisis, and I've noticed how many lots (most, really) are underused, but that's about it. OF COURSE public transportation is popular only in a tiny handful of places in the U.S. Note that using it (and building it, if it doesn't exist) is UNpopular in areas where parking is plentiful and cheap.... >:[
