I was fascinated when I learned what supposedly inspired this novel. Apparently, Victor Hugo said that he saw a Greek word carved into a wall inside one of the towers of Notre-Dame cathedral. The word was ΑΝΑΓΚΗ which translates as: Fate, destiny or inevitability. In the preface to his book, he wrote: "It is upon this word that this book is founded."
