Ch. 3 news spread about the new pearl. The doctor suddenly wanted to see the baby. He suspiciously gave the baby a white powder and after some writhing and committing the baby seemed better. Kino was suspicious of the doctor, and even the doctor said it would be a shame if the pearl was stolen before Kino could pay the doctor. Someone tried to steal it in the night. Juana wants the pearl gone, Kino wants to sell it.

Ch. 2 Cyotito swollen & feverish, family gets into canoe (lifeblood of family) to hunt pearls. The ppl have songs for events and history, even the pearl that might be. Kino dives and collects clams, loading his basket. He sees a glimmer from a giant ancient clam. So large he clutches it to his chest. So excited he opens the others first. It’s the biggest pearl ever. Baby’s fever and swelling gone. Kino cries out!
