I understand WHY Guite is going for christological symbolism here I just think it is running the wrong way, lifting Arthur up to Christ rather than bringing Christ down to Arthur, and again it feels part of the same tidying up of the legends that's bothering me throughout. As CS Lewis said, the Round Table is the peak that FAILS to reach Heaven

Oh well he's done exactly the thing with Guinevere that I hoped he wouldn't

The coronation has more Solomonic than Christological imagery, of which I thoroughly approve - Solomon being another "peak which failed to reach Heaven"

Okay so you all know how the Arthurian legend is, like, a synthesis of Christian and pagan myths??? So GALAHAD AND THE GRAIL was very focused on the Christian elements of the legends (which is very appropriate and faithful to the great medieval retellings) but THE COMING OF ARTHUR is very much to do with the pagan/Faerie elements and I am SO HERE FOR IT

Right away the poetry is a significant improvement on GALAHAD AND THE GRAIL, I'm delighted to say. Much smoother and more assured, with a more varied vocabulary and nice use of alliteration and assonance.

Fascinating! I haven't even read the first of these yet but I'm interested and have heard only good things about them until now. I'm excited to read your review of this one.
