The great Tai Pan. What’s that mean? Read the book. Know the origin story of Hong Kong? Again, read the book. It’s got a lot of information. Which is good because it’s over 700 pages. Not much filler. I do like James Clavell, the book and the story may feel a bit dated in its framing (depictions of east Asia sure have changed since the 80’s!) but I think if you understand the story’s place in history it’s a fine read
