Jacks wanted to spend his whole life with Evangeline.. so he asked Poison to find something (or someone) to make Evangeline stop growing old ..

So a Fae comes by .. and to stop Evangeline from growing old her life must be tied to Jacks. But they have to face tests.. he doesn’t want to. But still…

The emporium of Else is a/the test ..

“I know things. There’s a mark on her wrist that lets me know where she is.”
Sometimes, she was farther away, it was barely there. More like a string than a rope that tied them together. It had always felt like something. Until now.
“I can’t feel it anymore.”
And he knew that it was all his fault.

Jacks felt it then. An emptiness. An absence.
“What’s wrong with you?” Chaos asked.
“Evangeline . . . Something has happened to her
“How do you know?”

“What did he do?”
“He’s planning on proposing to LaLa.”
“Why don’t you just tell LaLa the truth?”
“You know I can’t.”
“You can. You just don’t want to.”
“I made a vow.”
“This is why vows are always bad ideas.”

“Is this what you’ve been up to?”
“It’s one of Evangeline’s hobbies.” Jacks gave the vampire a look that warned him not to insult her if he valued all of his body parts.
“Seems as if the Hollow isn’t the only one who’s prickly today.”
“I’m not prickly.”
“If you’re not, then why are you scowling?”
“Why are you?”
“I want to murder my brother.”
“Which one
“Dane.”

And suddenly she was too curious to stop herself. All she wanted was a peek. She just wanted to see what this other version of her had done differently.
Evangeline pressed her hands against the glass and said, “I’d like to see what else could be.”

If this mirror showed alternate endings, did that mean Evangeline’s current ending wasn’t going to involve marrying Jacks? She tried to erase the thought as soon as she had it. Then Evangeline was thinking about Jack’s strange behavior earlier, and the letter and the berries and the feeling that he was keeping something from her.

Evangeline was many things, but one could not call her practical or sensible. She was kindling in love with a spark. A moth to a flame. A mortal drawn to immortal things. And in this moment, she was feeling drawn to the magic and the mystery of the mirror.
“No, this is a bad idea.”

Evangeline looked like the opposite of a girl who might be attracted to trouble. And yet, she had been inescapably pulled toward Jacks. So captivated by him that she’d chosen to believe in the possibility of them rather than the impossibility.
