I didn’t solve it until near the end. Well crafted and kept me trying to think whodunnit while the alive descriptions distracted me. Visualizing and verbalizing were pretty much automatic, which I think shortened my reading time while letting me remember enough to think through the events for a solution. I liked how Bird skirted the edge of the PI trope but didn’t tumble into it

A book set in Toronto in a past before my past but with recognizable aspects. Poetic writing. Evocative descriptions. Interesting choice to have first person narrative. It makes the action come alive. The mystery and speed are making me more and more want to keep reading instead of getting down to my own writing. Finally a detective who isn’t a bundle of tropes.
