“The starting point of psychiatry cannot be the study of brain functions, and still less the molecular biology of neurotransmission or neuromodulation. What is distinctive about psychiatry is that, unlike neurology, it treats the psychological manifestations of functional pathologies of the nervous system. This obliges it to base its treatments on a theoretical understanding of the functions of the psyche.”

“Negotiating who cares for whom, and more generally whose needs are prioritized - in other words, ensuring that emotional resources are distributed fairly - concerns the play drive. Play is implicated in power dynamics, and in ensuring that both partners have fun.”

i used to think Freud’s ideas were stupid, but the more i read about psychoanalysis the more i see what a misunderstood genius he was. it makes sense that Jung (more or less a mystic) broke with Freud, who in his heart of hearts was a scientist. Mark Solms is well-informed in both psychoanalysis and neuroscience, equally important in my opinion. but really i just wish there’s a cure
