I think a big part of the reason I've looked back on this so fondly over the last decade is that it's prob the Abercrombie book that ends on the most positive note. It's still a darker ending than 90% of media but not quite as miserable as most of Abercrombie's stuff

Obligatory to mention (as I do when listening to every Abercrombie audiobook) that Steven Pacey is an absolutely brilliant narrator

When I 1st read this book (almost exactly a decade ago) I enjoyed it but considered it the weakest of Abercrombie's 6 released works at the time. Over the last decade however I've thought back on it often and it's grown on me massively. It now stands alongside The Heroes as 1 of Abercrombie's masterpieces. Will be interested to see how it holds up

(view spoiler)[ Also the darkest part of this books ending was Shivers losing his mind and becoming a bloodthirsty killer. Red Country and the New trilogy do a great job of turning him back into a fan favourite which takes the sting out of his ending in this book (hide spoiler)]
