currently reading through the historical introduction and it is… rough going. the author has already blamed the Jews two or three times for corrupting the Brazilians’ pure Islamic faith and complained about previous secular researchers on not focusing on the nobility of the great sheikh's conversion efforts.

so an ulema from Baghdad gets on an Ottoman Navy steamboat in 1865, gets caught in a storm and winds up in Brazil, where he finds a community of enslaved African Muslims that ask him to stay and teach them about their faith. twenty years later, this guy heads home and writes a book. which i am reading. in arabic. very slowly.
