There is something so haunting about the way Lucy writes of the young people in the book getting the news that England had declared war on Germany. It’s a perfect tension of disbelief and dread. It speaks to the moments we all have faced in our youth, where the world ceased to be our playground, and suddenly held horrors unknown.
