Just finished the wonderful account of the life of David Thompson, 1770-1837 geographer in Canada and diarist, with an amazingly refreshing outlook on the world.

"During the American Revolution, the British promised freedom to any slave—man, woman or child—who would desert his or her rebel master... George Washington met with his British counterpart, Sir Guy Carleton, to arrange to return the slaves to their owners... Carleton refused. He took them with the departing British fleet to Nova Scotia; what was at the time the largest group of free blacks in British North America."
