I see why the constant comparison to Joyce, but there is something different at work here. Doblin's Berlin is more cartoonishly bleak than Joyce's Dublin, and Biberkopf seems to have much more in common to an invention of Bukowski's than to Leopold Bloom. Regardless, very entertaining thus far.
