I'm beginning to love where this is going. I dig the sort of romance among kids who don't have a clear grasp of love yet. And it's poetically written.
"C'était un mal vague, intense, contre lequel il n'existe aucun remède, un désir chaste sans sexe et sans but."
It's interesting to read this book and look back on the film, as the two echo each other a lot. I can now say I know who Dargelos is, who Jean is, etc.

This is adorable. Elisabeth is such a great character, with temper but still sisterly love. And we get to hear about their mom, too.
Am I wrong to see a vibe of "L'Opoponax" in this book ? Kids playing, having feelings for each other, all told in an abstract-ish poetic way... Don't take my word for it, as I haven't read "L'Opoponax", but I just thought of it while reading.

Only the best love stories start by getting hit in the teeth with a rock by your crush. Don't give up, Paul.

I'm pausing here already because I just realized this is exactly the scene from "Le Sang d'un Poète", the second part with the snowball fight.
"Dargelos était le coq du collège". The same exact sentence is heard in the movie. Yeah, Cocteau. I knew I was gonna love you.
At first I was struggling a bit, but it picked up once we got to the snowy courtyard and the realization that I'm gonna love the shit out of this.
