Feel bad for Marullo he seems a good guy. Ethan confounds me a bit. I think I see his angle, but I want to believe he's more innocent than it seems. Really good. I should finish this novel pretty soon.

Really good. Not sure how the novel will end. Ethan seems to have gotten what he wants. Curious that Allen actually (nearly) won the contest. I guess I should’ve expected something to come of it though. How this novel will end, I’m not so sure. Ethan has done a lot of questionable stuff to get to where he is, so how will it come back to bite him (if at all)?

Clearly subtext can be a bit of a problem for me sometimes. Steinbeck's prose is fantastic once I can get into it a bit. Ethan puzzles me... I'm worried about what all he's going to do with what has happened to Danny and all the influences around him. Incredibly well written, I'm looking forward to the second part of The Winter of Our Discontent.

I really hope Danny doesn't take the money and do exactly what he says he's going to do. Ethan seems a bit naive but at the same time, I think anyone would hold out hope for someone they care about. The novel is pretty good. I'm not sure where it is going, being nearly halfway through it and all, but I am looking forward to seeing how it will progress.

As a fellow Ethan, I can empathize with how Ethan Allen Hawley feels about life. The premise of this novel reminds me a bit of John Updike's Rabbit, Run, but I hope Ethan does not turn out like Rabbit. I wonder what he will resort to in order to return his family's fortune. Overall, the writing is wonderful, and I absolutely love the setting, so I have high hopes for how the novel will turn out.
