What is with this writing?! I am so confused

I have never read a book that so overly relies on feet, socks and toes as a metaphor / body language & emotions / way to describe the setting e.g. raining. The word socks twice in the same line. Now that I've noticed it, I cannot un-notice it. The writing in this is irritating me when I should have ate a story like this up.
