6: Let the Silt Settle
To be restored will ineveitably take some intentionality and require us to embrace different practices that shape how we use our time. This is difficult work. But the only way to grow deep in these weary lands is to be still and silent . . . If we are to see ourselves and the world clearly, we have to have moments, days, and seasons when we let the silt of our lives settle.

8: All Smoke, All Flame
Embracing arduousness or staying in one's cell makes no sense unless we hold hope that our day, today, participates in an eternal story, an eternal good that we are part of. . . the Christian hope is that God will come, not to whisk us off to a faraway heaven, but to establish his kingdom here on earth---and our little work . . . take part in eternal goodness. The ashes give way to beauty.

7: Brace the Wall
We need others to hear, shape, and help address our questions. We need others to identify what threatens us to buckle the wall of our faith--the various stresses on it and fissures in it. We need others to fortify us and make us resilient.

4: Relax the Bow
It takes trust to let go, to cease striving. It takes trust to believe that we don't have to scissors-hold our life together with will power, energy, calendaring, and duct tape. We don't have a hard master. We can fall apart and trust God to put our head upon his knees and help us rest.

4: Wait in the Womb
My whole life is a womb. And whatever I feel at the moment--whether or not it seems anything much is happening--I am being formed for something new. We wait in hope to be brought, blinking, beloved, wide awake, into the light of day. The end is an arrival.

3: Pledge Your Body to the Walls
The things of God, it turns out, are surprisingly prosaic, ordinary, and unimpressive. If salvation is to meet us at all, it must meet us in the slog. We pray. We wait. We are patient. We persevere. And God rends the heavens to meet us in the last place that we expect to find him: exactly where we are.

2: Stay In Your Cell
In a week where doubt roars loud, faith feels weak, and prayer feels pointless: Just stay in the cell, we'll say. Keep praying, keep lifting your hands and bending your knees, keep meditating on the Psalms, keep practising silence, leaning in with expectation and longing.

1: Discovery in the Desert
When we meet the desert, we can try to avoid it through numbing, chasing little and big pleasures that hollow us over time. Or we can throw off our beliefs, obligations, and responsibilities, becoming agents of chaos to those around us. Or we can learn to keep going when we don't know where we are; we can submit to the discipline of the desert . . . the very place that we learn to grow.
