I believe Mary Katherine has PTSD from the trauma, causing her to compulsively carry out rituals to protect her and her family. Although they seem childish, she very much believes that a talisman ( like a book nailed to a tree) or “ magic” words will keep them safe. She lives in a constant state of fear of outsiders, possibly with good reason. Constance has become agoraphobic , also with good reason.
Uncle Julian is physically and mentally traumatized. The family is a target of curiosity seekers, adding to their fears and concerns. Jackson has created a powerful atmosphere of isolation, fear, and contempt, and gives a compelling internal glimpse of Mary Katherine’s mental state. fantastic writing
