The book takes place when World War II begins in town in northern England. The biggest event in the story is when Ada runs away, she ends up with Miss Smith, a lady who is mourning over her best friend's death. Together they survive

CONFLICT: The conflict of this book is CHARACTER v.s. CHARACTER. Ada the main character is locked in their one bedroom apartment. Her mother is ashamed of her clubbed foot to let her out. " 'He's normal enough.' To *Jamie she said, 'You're not like Ada, you can go wherever you like.' This evidence shows that Ada is kept out of the world and she has to thank her mother for that.
