The book feels much more meandering towards the end than the movie did. There was the original plotline about getting to see the wizard and doing in the Wicked Witch, but once that was resolved, we're still here, making up new things. I mean resolving the plot didn't end the story in the movie either, but it all still got done fairly quickly afterwards when the Good Witch re-entered the play. Here, though...

I think I liked the Wizard's rewards better in the movie, too. He was more up-front about what they actually meant and no one needed to be tricked anymore because they knew they were worthy.

The Wicked Witch of the West was the first thing that I liked a lot better in the movie than in the book, what with being a recurring menace from the start rather than something that was just thrown at them from essentially out of nowhere near the end.

But on the other hand, the book, unlike the movie, foreshadowed the water bucket a little bit, so swings and roundabouts.

Basically the exact same scene four times, with little variations - proper fairy-tale-style repetition done right.

It's nice to see the Tin Man and the Lion be actually useful. In the movie, the former mostly just kept crying and the latter was genuinely cowardly, and the Scarecrow carried the whole party. Far more equal here.

On the other hand, we've got a few scenes here that the movie didn't have. I guess it preferred to get rid of them and replace them with musical numbers. That's fine: when you can do sound, you might as well have music too.

Apart from the Tin Man's backstory, none of them have been that interesting anyway.

Saw the movie quite recently - better late than never - and thought I should obviously pick up the book as well.

Getting right into the business much faster. Not much developing of Kansas, and absolutely no farmhands or wandering charlatans or wicked old dog-hating women. I guess this means it's not going to be all just a dream like the movie was (by executive mandate, I hear). That'd be good at least.
