About co-optation in US: Something like an "abuse" happens. A "progressive" candidate runs on a platform of stopping the "abuse". People that might otherwise get involved in street-level politics instead get involved in electoral campaigns -- co-optation acting as pressure release valve on radical political energy. It directs attention to individual misconduct and EVENTS of "abuse" rather than the underlying system.
