In parallel with following the plot-lines, I am trying to determine when this is set. Not earlier than the 1960s, if you think of the family history. Could be as late as nowadays, if you allow for the lack of smartphones. The most telling part, so far, has been the mention of garbage bags — that must be the 1980s onwards, I believe.
