She's shaking her head. "Okay. It's your choice." I start to leave the sink, but Leah opens her mouth, like she has something else to say. When i pause, she has trouble meeting my eye. "I'm just wondering...can we still--I don't know--talk and hang out and stuff?"
Leah looks so sincere right now that I can't help but grin. "Yeah. Yeah, I'd really like that."

He lets out a heavy sigh as he drops the toast on his plate. "Anyway--I'm happy that you're happy. That's allt hat ever matters, right?"
"Right."
He picks up a glass of orange juice. "Is it Ezra?"
"What? No!"
He narrows his eyes, like he doesn't believe me. "You two spend every second together, so I just assumed..."
"Bad assumption to make. Bad, bad assumption."

Why're you pretending to be a boy?
I stare at the message. There's a whoosh that goes through me and I can feel my emotions become still as numbness prickles. Besides the gallery, I've never really had to experience this kind of hate for who I am before--not directly. I always see it on the news.

My dad's always been the kind of person to have odd jobs. He told me once that his passion isn't work--it's his family. He would've been totally happy as a stay-at-home dad. Mom worked as a nurse at the hospital, bringing home the bacon, I guess--but when she left, everything fell apart. Now my dad's fighting to send me to a private school filled with rich kids, just so that I can live my dream and have a chance.
