As friends and family moved in to meet the man who’d saved Jack’s life, she knew everything was just as it should be. The bad guys were in prison, her life in Boston had ended, but she had a new beginning here with Jack and she couldn’t be happier. This is where she wanted to be, at his side with the future ahead of them. Life was good.

Darci soon lost herself in the words, no longer feeling the sadness of the break-up of her band or the loss of the man she loved. She’d written their song when she returned to Boston and her band was playing it tonight for the first time as their final set. She only hoped she could get through it without bursting into tears.

Unless… She stopped dead in her tracks and stared at Jack’s back. Unless in his eyes nothing had happened and last night meant nothing to him. What a fool. Here she was writing songs and having delusions of love while Jack thought about breakfast and the weather. He obviously didn’t share her feelings. Last night had been good, but not good enough.

He barely managed to set her bag safely by the door before she threw herself in his arms, kissing him like there was no tomorrow. When she pulled away she asked, “What about our bodyguard?” “You’re gonna have to keep it quiet,” he said with a grin. Her eyes widened. “He knows?”
“He’s a man, babe.”

Last night she’d fallen asleep before her head hit the pillow, much to her annoyance. Sure, she’d been exhausted, but not so much that she didn’t want to wait and see if Jack would make a move. He hadn’t, darn his honorable soul. The man was just too noble for her own good.

He rubbed his thumb across her cheek, felt her relax beneath his touch. She trusted him. He could see it in her eyes. Humbled, he realized this woman would give her whole heart with the right man, hold nothing back. Some lucky bastard would spend the rest of his life waking up with this beautiful, spirited woman in his arms.

Jack is a navy SEAL? ...that's the THIRD failed escape attempt now. If he had shot/killed the kidnappers instead of just hitting them before he ran, MAYBE he and Darci could escape! His promise not to let hurt her isn't worth much yet.

“You’d do that for me?” Jack grinned. “In a heartbeat.” Tears slid down her cheeks, yet she smiled. “Do you always cry when you smile?” he teased. She laughed quietly and he felt an odd pressure build inside his chest. “I want to kiss you, Jack Taggart.” Her smile faded. Something passed between them and he knew his life would never be the same again. This stunning Celtic singer changed everything.

He usually kept his relationships short and impersonal, but something about Darci made him want to explore the more serious side of relationships. He’d failed this woman twice and yet she looked at him with trust in her eyes. It humbled him enough to make him see this was no ordinary woman. She’d saved him from a real beating and he wouldn’t forget the bravery she’d shown. Worthy of a Purple Heart.

Darci realized she couldn’t reach his hands. “You’re too tall.” She braced a hand on his waist to keep him still and stretched as high as she could. Not even close. “’S okay. Go now.” Darci looked up into a pair of warm brown eyes. “I won’t leave you. They’ll kill you.”
“Never happen, I have 9 lives. Only used 3 so far.” She let out a half-laugh, half-sob and shook her head. “Well, you’re not using any more tonight.
