A wonderful mix of a social novel, a Bildungsroman and a sort of proto-beat novel, but without much of the pretentiousness of Kerouac, Ginsberg or that ilk. Maugham’s investigations of mysticism—navigated through Larry—seem more rooted in a genuine curiosity than a pompous assertion of esoteric intelligence. Pretty lovely so far!
