The protagonist and his friends have been sent out of the convent to learn more about the orbiting spaceship.

The protagonist monk was sentenced to weeks of memorizing meaningless text for interfering in an investigation. Months later his mentor is banished from the order and so he and his friends try to uncover what the mentor had been working on.

There was a big festival to celebrate the beginning of the decade and the welcoming of new monks.

The gate opens up for the celebration of the new decade so the protagonist on his friend are able to walk around the town surrounding their sanctuary. I guess the ordinary folk eat food that regulates their mood.

So far this book is doing the thing where it throws a bunch of sci fi terms at you.
