I had almost five years to think about the first time Sara and Will would meet. There were several scenarios I tossed around in my head, but in the end, I thought it was important for them to each start at a level of respect for each other. The fact that Amanda Wagner, whose involvement in Will’s life is a slowly unwrapped mystery, has been the Great Oz behind the curtain, is only part of the story. Will is stubborn and has a long history of agreeing with the women in his life, then doing whatever the hell he wants, but I think his moral compass, his desire to be a good person, is the reason readers continue to root for him.

He had never understood his relationship with Angie Polaski. He had known her since he was eight years old and there wasn’t much he had figured out in the ensuing years, except that the minute she felt too close to him, she headed for the door.
