Black women labored in the fields alongside black men, but few if any black men labored as domestics alongside black women in the white household (with the possible exception of butlers, whose status was still higher than that of a maid).

Slavery is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible for women. Superadded to the burden common to all, they have wrongs, and suffering, and mortifications peculiarly their own.

so far it’s comparing the experiences of black women and men too much for my liking

i get that some contrast is necessary but honestly it feels like it’s arguing who had a worse experience during slavery when obviously slavery was just terrible all around

maybe it could use less emphasis on how slavery for black men was relatively chill while still focusing on the brutalities of slavery for black women

Invariably, I hear from some dude that Black women must be supportive and patient so that black men can regain their manhood. The notion of womanhood, they argue-and only if pressed to address themselves to the notion do they think of it or argue-is dependent on his defining his manhood. So the shit goes on.
