So much writing only for nothing major to have happened. Very slight developments in Hester’s situation and guilt consuming a pastor does not constitute 80+ pages of fluff trying to pad out the length of what should have been a short story that ended 60 pages ago.

Hawthorne is using a lot of overly complex compensatory flowy language to compensate for a lack of depth in plot. It’s a very one dimensional book criticizing puritan society and 1800’s Christians.
