This 100% feel's like a repurposed screenplay. Like Abercrombie figured he could pitch a "Suicide Squad but dark fantasy" to HBO or something. It's even got the requisite girlbossery (female pope, female priests, female Christ, most dangerous members of the group are female, every female is promiscuous but never has to consider pregnancy, etc). It's not exactly BAD, but so far it's the worst thing I've read by him.

This feels like Abercrombie is hoping to have it optioned for a tv series -- hence the plethora of anachronistic and inexplicable girlbosses. The pope is a woman. The religious authorities are women. The toughest, coolest warrior is a woman. Some of the dialogue also feels very "Veilguard"-coded.
