I too understand the madness that ensues when someone you love dies. But I kept mine clothed. Respectable. I kept mine hidden so as not to frighten people. But it was there, behind my job, behind my eyes. My grief – because I was respectable – was not misinterpreted. I too went mad, Mr. Drake. But I still polished my shoes.

He ate the last of his bread and realized it wasn't hunger that he felt but loneliness. It was an empty space where his heart should have been. That's when he decided to return to England. He needed to find something that belonged in his chest, if only to stop the hunger.
