Case could have been solved months ago with a search warrant for the killer's room.

He’d sworn to himself that he’d never tell a woman he loved her only to have her leave. He’d been wrong. Tomorrow he intended to tell Cassie that she was the woman he’d been waiting for...the woman he wanted by his side for the rest of his life. Tomorrow he’d press her for a final decision on whether she was going to leave Bitterroot or stay here with him. He only hoped her answer didn’t rip his heart out.

He was probably all kinds of a fool to have allowed those words of love to slip out of his mouth. Now things would really be awkward between them. Still, there was no way in hell he was leaving her at that ranch alone with only a security system and a gun she wasn’t proficient with standing between her and a killer.

He took her fast and furiously and it was just the way she wanted it. She met him thrust for thrust. It was an affirmation of life that she knew they both desperately needed after death had come so close to them. When they were finished he kissed her with a tenderness that swelled her heart. And she felt like crying because she knew she was in love with a man who had already told her he wasn’t looking for love.

She couldn’t have predicted that a killer would come after her and Dillon would move in here and they’d make love. She certainly couldn’t have foreseen that he’d touch her heart in a way it had never been touched before. But he wasn’t looking for love. She knew with a woman’s intuition that he regretted them falling into bed together.

“I’ll bet there are times you wished you’d never loved her, and then her absence wouldn’t hurt so badly,” Dillon said. Leroy looked at him as if he’d lost his mind. “I wouldn’t give back one day with her to ease my pain. I’ve got 49 years of memories with that woman...years of loving and knowing I was loved. No, sir, I wouldn’t do a thing differently.

With shaking fingers she dialed Dillon’s number, nearly sobbing when he answered on the first ring. “Somebody’s in the house,” she whispered into the phone. “Where are you?” His voice held urgency. “I’m in the closet in my bedroom. Hurry, Dillon, I think he’s coming up the stairs.”
“I’m on my way.”

She stared at her reflection in the mirror and another low moan escaped her. Her curly blond hair was in tangles and mascara had moved from her lashes to form dark shadows beneath her eyes. She looked like she’d been ridden hard and put away wet. “You wish,” she said ruefully to the reflection and then turned her back and started the water for a shower.
