Subplot: David Michael's always collected baseball cards, but now he's gotten into values, thanks to some haughty kid at their little kid swap meets. That kid scams him out of a valuable card, and D.M. learns a Valuable Lesson about THE HEART OF THE CARDS (but not the one he should've, which is to believe in it). Easily the weakest part of the book by far.

OH YEAH, and Kristy mentions Watson is just slightly older than her mom (who's 35), probably putting him at 40-45. Not the 50 I always imagined.

Kristy even notes at one point she considers leaving the camp and GOING HOME to help D.M. with his problem, but decides against it because that's what the BSC is for. UM, maybe that should be what his MOM is for? Or Charlie? Sam? Nannie?! The height of ridiculousness when it comes to Kristy's family (at least Watson's actually acting like a dad).

Instead of her magically becoming an amazing player, she realizes she might never be one and decides that coaching is her real future-- and reading this, that seems pretty likely.

This is another one of these later books where the BSC (other than in the subplot) are MIA, which honestly isn't a bad thing here. All the adults in here are realistically flawed without going overboard, too.

The first couple chapters of this were rough, but it actually ended up being a nice little book. Kristy's super excited because she and Watson are going to a dad-and-daughters baseball camp where ex-pros will teach them, but then she gets placed on the second string for SMS softball and loses faith in her abilities.
