This takes place in the same universe as The Thread That Binds the Bones, but is a more personal story, filtered through a first-person narrator instead of sometimes-POV-drifting third-person. Unlike Thread, which I think I'd only read once, I've reread this one several times- I'm curious to see if there are any links between them.

The difference between seeing a story world through third-person POV (even relatively-tight third-person POV) and first-person POV is really interesting. I enjoy series like this that do both.

A lot of what's happening magically in this one is much clearer having read Thread That Binds the Bones just before it- Willow and Evan are more clearly members of that family who've been sent away to remove them from the sphere of corrupt magical behavior.
