He was a family friend who traveled through Kuomintang-dominated central China on the eve of Pearl Harbor. He died when I was "just a lad." Needless to say, having lived there for years, he was an excellent Chinese cook, as good as an American can get. His book is an intensely vivid account of being smuggled into Chungking (or Kwangsi?) via Hong Kong and Macao. In Luchow he witnesses a bombing by the Japanese.
