This is where, if it weren't for peer pressure, I would officially give up and declare this a weird combination of melodrama and boring. As it is, though, I'm gonna try and tough it out.

"I do feel it's absurd..." she added with the wisdom invariably shown by people who, not being in love themselves, feel that a clever man should only be unhappy about a person who is worth his while; which is rather like being astonished that anyone would condescend to die of cholera at the bidding of so insignificant a creature as the comma bacillus.

I'm not sure why my perception has changed so much in the last 80 pages, but I'm really, really liking this now.

Dear Proust: A name for our protagonist, along with a general sense of his age, would be GREAT. Just, whenever you get around to it. I understand you want to finish describing the steeple using nine different extended metaphors and comparing it to every other steeple you've seen throughout your life, but whenever you're done with that, just a name and an age would be great. Please.

Ah, maybe my problem is that it hasn't been very clear that the author is also laughing at these people. The protagonist also seems intensely useless, which made me feel Proust was taking this all very seriously, and was totally unaware of his own privilege. Maybe it's just not the best book to read when you're job hunting, and the stark realities of middle-class existence are weighing down on you like a wet poncho.
I think I got to maybe 100. But, I will catch up. I had social stuff for graduation, but now I can get back to my true reclusive nature. whew!
I'm even worse. I just ordered a different translation, so I'm at square one at the moment. Sorry!
Wow, I never thought I'd be in the lead after a week! No need to apologize; since I tend to read slowly, I'm usually the last person to finish things. Being ahead is a new and exciting experience. Have you already read the whole series, Elizabeth? I'm not committing to anything yet, but now that I have started, I may just see if I can get through the whole series. Obviously, I'm liking it much more than I was yesterday.
I can tell your memory is much better than mine. I'm afraid if I went a week or more between readings, I'd totally lose track of the plot, if one wants to call it that.
I remember reading somewhere that the individual books are supposed to be able to stand alone. I find that really, really hard to believe now that I'm reading one of them. You don't think a wikipedia summary would be enough to catch you back up? That's what I always do when picking a series back up, and if it works for George R R Martin, I would think it would work here. They're basically the same.

And if this kid cries while sniffing flowers one more time....I don't know what I'll do, but it will involve a lot of swearing.
