He couldn’t believe the same nightmare was happening all over again. He’d told the officers everything, including the fact that he’d been railroaded the first time, in case they’d forgotten. He got no sympathy whatsoever. Nothing he said made any difference, and in fact, might’ve made things worse.

Last night, after making love twice, she’d slept more soundly than she had in years. And early this morning, she’d dreamed of dancing in the flower gardens at her childhood home in Phoenix, her place of escape as a child. She’d felt free—as if she’d shed a heavy weight.

I want the real criminal behind bars. I want to find the people who stole my life. Then―if I get anything, I’ll take the information to the police, attorney general or someone who can do something. Then, I can go on. I’d like to live the way I should have all these years.” He looked directly into her eyes. “Maybe get married. Have some kids.” A gentle smile tipped his lips. “Yeah…I think I’d like to do that.

When Tori was there, he had a sense that everything was going to be okay. A few times he’d thought that if he had to make a life without remembering, he could handle it if Tori was part of it. She was honest, loving, sincere, warm, confident, and it didn’t hurt that she make his heart skip a beat.

The doc had said he didn’t have amnesia. His mind selectively blocked out things too traumatic to remember. Partial amnesia or a fugue. A stupid word. He could think of another F word that described it better, especially when combined with up.

Two years of depositions, court motions and subpoenas before he’d finally had a trial. He’d lost everything. His fiancée…his scholarship to law school…his friends…and his dog. His mother, who’d been battling cancer for a year when he was arrested, had passed away during the trial.
