This story uses a train voyage as a metaphor for life. It makes me think back to another story I read many years ago, of a woman in a coma whose spirit ended up in this liminal place where trains went by, a metaphor of needing to move on into the true afterworld.

A number of interesting stories here, including one of a ghost and a voodoo doll, a story of early humans, and several about growing up. But my favorite is the story of the lad in Belfast who is given a toy FDNY fire truck set, complete with Chief's hat, and who by some magic has them come to live and travel through time to be there when his father needs them during a Nazi bombing raid.

Mixed results on both of the latest stories. I'm still not really warming to this anthology, and wondering whether I might as well just skim the rest so I can write up a review. But whimsical fantasy is always a hard sell for me.

I'm not usually much for whimsical fantasy, and I have to admit that the first story really bothered me. It was meant to be funny, but I cringed as the cars wreaked havoc. Sure, some of those people were greedy and grasping, but what about the people who were selling prized possessions for money to pay off a burdensome debt or fund a child's education? Now they have nothing.
