Jamie was good for her. His upbeat, positive approach to life was the perfect antidote to her serious nature. To her worry and brooding. She wanted to hold onto him and never let go. She wanted his lightness in her life, his joy, his ability to make her laugh.

"I do love you, Jamie," she whispered. "I don't want to let you go. And if we can't..."
"Shh." He put his finger on her lips. "We're not talking about can't. We're talking about maybe. And we're going to think positive thoughts. We're going to hope.

I wanted you, and they told me you weren't here." She frowned. "They're getting Rose. I love Rose, but I love you more." His heart swelled. Thank God they'd given Helen the good drugs. He was pretty sure she wouldn't have admitted loving him without being drugged. "I love you, too, Helen." He curled his fingers around hers, vowing to never let go.

He slid his hands beneath her arms and drew her against him. "Aren't you jumping the gun a little?" he murmured into her ear. "We've known each other for a week, Helen. One week. And you're dumping me because you know I want kids and you think you can't have them."

He couldn't love her. That wasn't part of the deal. She knew what he wanted in his life, and she wasn't it. Couldn't be it. But her heart swelled with longing. Need. Grew and grew until she thought it would burst out of her. "I love the way we are together, too," she finally said, although it felt like a betrayal.

Her job had always come first. And no one else had ever made her yearn for what she couldn't have. Maybe she and Jamie could have a fling while he worked on her office. Maybe...maybe this insane need for each other would burn itself out in the month or so that he'd be around. She wouldn't think about what would happen if it didn't.

"Anyone have a grudge?" Connor asked. Helen laughed. "I'm a lawyer. Tons of people hate me. They need to take a number if they want a shot at me." Jamie shoved his hands into his pockets. He liked that she could laugh at herself. And make light of what she did for a living. But the thought that someone had deliberately targeted her?

After ramming into her office, the driver had reversed and driven away. The moments after the car splintered the glass window were a jumble of memories – the crunch of the reception desk, the grill of the SUV barreling toward her. Helen was almost certain she'd heard the car accelerate after it hit the wall separating her office from the reception area.
