Wanting him felt like falling and flying all at once.

When I'd first arrived in Ely, I'd been convinced I was going to die here, withering in some forgotten corner of the world. But now I realized my cause of death would just be from a broken heart that never really broke in the first place.

Brady, Brady, Brady - that's the sound my heart made with every beat.

Reed would never stay in Ely. This wasn't his home, the way it was mine. In a few months, he'd be back in New York, and Mona and the mountains and I would just be a distant memory of a strange and half-forgotten time in his life. He wouldn't think of me, but I would think of him. It was too late to stop myself from being hurt. I was already in so far over my head.

And I just knew I'd never be good enough for him. But I wanted to be. And maybe I could try to be.

Because my heart was going BradyBradyBrady, and I had to keep saying no.

I'm not sure it I did a very good job reassuring him. But, in my typical fashion, I couldn't quite find the words to tell him that he didn't need to worry. If anyone had had a problem with Reed, they would have had to answer to me first. I would have protected him.

I wanted to ask him if he was like me, if as a kid, he'd ever wished on eyelashes and dandelion fluff that he weren't gay.

Maybe it was okay for something as ordinary as kindness to be completely revolutionary.
