The protagonist of 1984, Winston, is not even sure of the date, but claims the year is 1984, and near the beginning of the the book, April. Winston lives in the city of London, now the capital of a totalitarian party known as Ingsoc or “The Party”. London is also the regional capital of what used to be Great Britain, now known as Airstrip one. Winston works in one of the four massive citadels in the city that are departments of the government. Later in the book, Winston travels to the slums, dominated by the mass of the proletariat. Even further, he spends time in the countryside outside of London, to have his illegal love affair.
