Suzie couldn’t take her eyes off the unconscious figure on the ground. She wouldn’t allow herself to think about what had almost happened, or what could have happened. Chris had come for her. He’d rescued her. “Your heart is hammering like a hummingbird’s,” he pointed out. “That’s just because I’m standing next to you,” she cracked.

You want a picture painted? How about this one?” she asked, just before she leaned in to whisper into his ear. She told him, in detail, exactly what she intended to do the minute they reached her apartment. Chris pressed down on the accelerator as far as it would go. “Driving faster,” he announced. The sound of her laughter warmed his heart.

How is it that no one ever made love to you before, Suzie Q?” She smiled up into his eyes. “No one was ever fast enough to catch me before.”
“And I was?” he questioned, amused. “Or maybe you just got lucky because I got tired of running.”
“You got that right,” he told her. He saw her eyebrow arch, as if she wasn’t following him. “I got lucky.” With that, he lowered his mouth to hers.

Andrew Cavanaugh's parties are an aphrodisiac. The heroes and heroines always end up getting lucky after they leave. Often it begins as comfort after tears and confessions. They resist going to the party but are always glad they did after!

I can walk,” she informed him curtly. “And I look forward to watching that,” he told her. “By the way, you look nice.”
“I look dressed,” Suzie corrected tersely, since she felt that there was nothing particularly outstanding about what she had on. “That’s one way to describe it,” he allowed, wanting to avoid getting into an argument with her.

No real suspense/action so far. No close calls, shots fired or even a creepy note or phone call. Lots of talking, eating and internal monologues though.

Who am I to argue?”
“I don’t know, but you’ve been doing a damn good job of it so far,” he commented. “Why don’t we call a truce and order? The sooner we eat, the sooner you can get rid of me,” he added. “Waitress!” Suzie called out in response, raising her hand to attract the attention of the lone server. “You sure know how to make a guy feel special,” he told her, amused.

Why, Suzie Q, do you want me to do your work for you? Hey, that rhymes,” he realized with a laugh, followed by the killer smile. Suzie clenched her hands before her. “Here he lies dead, after taking a blow to the head. That rhymes, too,” she snapped. “Now, if you don’t want that on your tombstone...” Chris laughed. “All right, you twisted my arm.

The teens regarded the body nervously. “Could we stand over here instead, not so close to her?” Allen asked, pointing to an area in the opposite direction. “Death isn’t catching,” Chris informed him in a no-nonsense voice. “Unless, of course, you and your friend try to run.”

My hobby is crime solving. With the hours I keep, I wouldn’t leave a pet alone all day—it wouldn’t be fair. There’s nothing currently playing in the movie theaters that I want to see. And FYI, I already know how to cook and windsurf,” she concluded. “Besides, I like my job, so why shouldn’t I put in some extra hours every now and then?
