By page 74, she talks about Justin, her first crush, Jessica, and Alex, who were both her friends when she moved to the school. The settings that everyone is usually at is, the coffee shop, where they all met and the high school.

The author's style is choppy and conversational. All of Thirteen Reasons Why is in thought or conversation. Hannah's always talking on the tapes and Clay is either talking to someone or is in thought. On page 22, Hannah says "'So Justin, what's the math problem?' I asked. You weren't getting off that easy". And then it goes back to Clay. It says "Or maybe I'll take the tapes somewhere else. Somewhere private..."
