Fascinating ideas—particularly of how the mythology of Viêt Nam tries to find a space in Paris—and wonderful writing, but not a book for me. It builds a fascinating world of magic and fallen angels and forced migration, but with the action mostly confined to a tiny part of Paris I felt stifled, and most of the characters, while interesting and hurt, weren’t people I enjoyed being trapped with.
