Just came to the end of Volume 1 -- the Battle of Austerlitz is over.

Tolstoy's writing -- in this translation -- feels absolutely contemporary. I perhaps have the advantage of being very interested in the whole military history aspect of the thing, but I find the experience of reading this very compelling. I'm pretty sure I haven't gotten to "the point" of the book, and can't talk of the benefits of having read it ... but reading it is a good time.
