“Mister Squishy” — my first DFW short story. Page-long sentences galore. Acronyms galore. Statistical math galore. “Felonies!” are now among Krabby Patties and McDonald’s Szechuan Sauce in the list of unobtainable foods I want to try. Y’know, as long as there’s no ricin involved. Also: suction cups???

Wallace’s prose in these stories is most comparable to TV commercials. There’s so few paragraph breaks and periods that I sometimes get lost in a sentence and have to fight my way back through dependent clauses for the length of a whole page. This goes by so quickly that in the end it’s a blur of stream-of-consciousness writing — in the same way watching 20 commercials in a 3 minute period is disorienting.

I’ve listened to virtually every single DFW interview on the Internet, but this is my first time reading his work instead of just hearing him speak about it. Slowly building my way up toward reading Infinite Jest. Wooooooooot!!
