It’s getting interesting now that the superpowers are kicking in.

Good so far. However it is more than a little annoying that the narrator (or rather author) states early on that he will never explain why the main characters got their powers. “They just suddenly have them, so there” isn’t the most satisfying answer. It just feels like he couldn’t come up with a valid reason and so didn’t bother.
