The author has been a journalist and it shows. It's fairly rare that I find a history book with such lovely writing. I also had no idea about how bad things were early in the Civil War for Louisiana. I knew that New Orleans had fallen early. I also knew that General Butler was not well liked by the denizens of New Orleans, but I had no idea just how little support LA got from the Confederacy.
